number of studies have shown that the manifestation of heterosis may be A dependent on physical and biotic environments. DOBZHANSKY et al. (1955) found that Drosophila pseudoobscura heterozygous for genes on the second chromosome was, in general, superior to homozygotes in viability. The relative viabilities of homozygotes and heterozygotes changed, however, with varying temperatures and with different kinds of yeasts used in the media. In Drosophila melanogaster, the superior fitness of ebony heterozygotes ( e /+ ) over the homozygotes has been well established. The literature has been reviewed by MOREE and KING (1961) who also reported that the superiority in larval viability of e/+ hybrids over e/e parents increased with increasing larval density. DAWOOD and STRICKBERGER (1964) found that the larval viability of the +/e hybrids was superior to that cf the wild-type flies when the two genotypes were competing in crowded cultures. More recently, DAWOOD and STRICKBERGER (1969) reported that the viability of e/+ larvae relative to the parental genotypes was affected by the age structure of the competing larvae, by larval density, and by the interactions between these two factors. Evidence of dependence of heterosis on environments in plants is also available. For example, temperature-dependent heterosis in plant weight of Arabidopsis thaliana has been reported by GRIFFING and LANGRIDGE (1963). More recently GRIFFING and ZSIROS (1971) reported that the heterotic response in plant weight of Arabidopsis thaliana was affected by nutrition, temperature, and plant associations. DOBZHANSKY (1 952) distinguished two kinds of heterosis: euheterosis, which is related to the relative fitness of the genotypes; and luxuriance, which describes the greater size and growth rate of the hybrids. Thus the experimental results in Drosophila reported earlier may be said to represent euheterosis while the evidence in Arabidopsis may be luxuriance. Both types of heterosis are important in their own right. However, there is little experimental work relating the two kinds of heterosis over a range of environmental conditions. The present communication reports a study of hybrid vigor in Drosophila nielanogaster over a range of physical and biotic environ-

Concentration dependent effect of morphine, aspirin, capsaicin and chili pepper hydro alcoholic extract on thermal and chemical pain model in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...

Aconitase and Developmental EndPointsasEarly IndicatorsofCellularToxicity Induced by Xenobiotics in Drosophila Melanogaster

Background: In this study, the toxicity of the different xenobiotics was tested on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster model system.  Methods: Fly larvae were raised on food supplemented with xenobioticsat different concentrations (sodium nitroprusside (0.1-1.5 mM), S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5-4 mM), and potassium ferrocyanide (1 mM)). Emergence of flies, food intake by larvae, and pupation h...

Toxicological Evaluation of a New Lepidopteran Insecticide, Flubendiamide, in Non-Target Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...

Allozyme-associated heterosis in Drosophila melanogaster.

Two large experiments designed to detect allozyme-associated heterosis for growth rate in Drosophila melanogaster were performed. Heterosis associated with allozyme genotypes may be explained either by functional overdominance at the allozyme loci, or closely linked loci; or by genotypic correlations between allozyme loci and loci at which deleterious recessive alleles segregate. Such genotypic...

Overall D. melanogaster Cohort Viability as A Pollution Indicator of the Atmospheric Air of Urban Landscapes

The method of air pollution level evaluation of urban landscapes on the basis of D. melanogaster cohort analysis has been suggested. The method implies the binding to the landscape areas of the city. Within each landscape area traps and cultivators for D. melanogaster have been installed in sanitary-protective zones of various enterprises as well as on the background territory with the least le...
